I'm Riding For

Bernadette van den Broek and Zach Hovinga

This year I am riding for Bernadette van den Broek. Bernadette was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and will begin her treatment in the next week. Bernadette and her family need all the support and positivity in the world right now. I am also riding in memory of my friend Zach Hovinga (1988 - 2025) who sadly passed away in May after a year long battle with cancer. I hadn't seen Zach in several years, but I have many happy and funny memories of Zach from the time I lived in Kitchener.

My Story

Hi everybody,

This August, I will be participating in the Great Cycle Challenge (Canada) again. Since I first became involved with the GCC in 2021, I have ridden 3,738 km and raised $2,512 for the SickKids Foundation. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me over the last 5 years.

The SickKids Foundation leads the fight for the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, one of the world's most reputable paediatric health-care institutions. In Canada, approximately 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and SickKids treats approximately 25% of all childhood cancer patients across the country.

This challenge and cause have a very special place in my heart, and I have every intention of participating in the GCC for many years to come. This year, my goal is to ride 500 km and raise $500. As always, I hope to surpass these numbers as I have every year since I started. My 1983 Cambio Rino road bike will be my trusty steed again this year which I outfitted with brand new bar tape last night.
